Dana Awartani’s eight hanging embroideries, Love is my Law, Love is my Faith are inspired by the eight love poems by Ibn Arabi that he wrote in dedication to the Kaaba and have come to be known to embody all the diversity and variations Arabic literature has to offer on the theme of love. Using the traditions of textiles Awartani creates genealogies of meaning that act as a form of meditation, prayer, contemplation and a search for the inner spirit rather than outer, and her works are visual representation of a culturally specific time and space. Awartani’s traditional materials ensure that the past is always in conversation with the contemporary and the contemporary is always speaking to the past. For her, life and love can only be depicted through geometry in such a way that Ibn Arabi’s words resonate through her to us in the present world.
