The work on show that Awartani has created are replica tiles from the Dome of the Rock in Jerusalem, using paper nets she invites the viewer to take home and own an essence of one of the most sacred sites in history. The pattern that Awartani has chosen for this piece is of the six-pointed star which is more commonly known as the “Star of David” in the Jewish tradition or “The Seal of Solomon” in the Islamic tradition and has been a constant topic of debate and tension amongst religious communities. The question of who it belongs to, or rather, where it comes from, has often been misconstrued and changed over time holding highly opposing significance in different communities. The piece invites the audience to re-evaluate and re-examine their certain pre-conceived notions towards a symbol and to confront the idea of ownership and belonging of a sight that has always been a focal point for religious war and bloodshed for thousands of years.
